We deplore the systematic, planned and state-enforced killings of suspected drug users in the country. Since publicly pledging to kill criminals and eradicate drugs, the President has authorised the police to ignore the rule of law and human rights in cracking down illegal drug use. By the end of 2017, more than 20,000 drug-related killings have been reported as “accomplishments” by the Police. Shall we watch the numbers rise before we finally stand against impunity’s reign in our country?
While rampant drug use is a problem, fighting it never gives the government license to disregard Constitutional and international legal obligations. The right to life and security of every person must be protected regardless if they are, or are not suspected criminals.
On Human Rights Day, we unite with the thousands of Filipino families calling for an end to impunity in this country.
